BiographyBiography: Alessandro Maganza was the most prodigious and prolific of the Maganza family of artists, who lived and worked in Vicenza in the Veneto. He was the son of the painter and poet Giovanni Battista Maganza and was first trained by his father. He later entered a second apprenticeship in Giovanni Battista Fasolo’s workshop. In 1572 Maganza moved to Venice, where he was inspired by the works of Tintoretto and Veronese, as well as by the decorative and academic paintings of Palma the Younger. In 1576 he returned to Vicenza and, until his death in 1632, completely dominated the artistic life of the city and its vicinity. Maganza’s comprehensible and persuasive paintings, with their respect for the Tridentine decrees, were highly appreciated at the time.
