DescriptionDescription: Mercury, Two Versions. The paper worn away in the darkest parts. No watermark. Inscribed at lower right in pen and grey ink: Maganza, numbered: 1306 (Sparre) and 1, (struck out). Inscribed verso at lower right: batista pittore ... Zelotti. The old inscription attributing this drawing to Maganza still appears credible. Maganza's work is characterized by an undulating, mannerist contour and point-like accents; he also employs dramatic contrasts of light and shade, usually by applying a heavy wash. The largest groups of maganza drawings are in Florence, Munich and the Janos Scholz collection. There are, however, no sheets with which directly to compare ours, with its hatching and cross-hatching. But the link with Maganza is clear, even though one cannot be certain whether this work is original or by an anonymous assistant. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 79]
