Additional texteExhibition text: The carefully worked-up drawing served as model for the engraving after Rubens’ painting. Rubens closely supervised the execution of both drawing and print. He reworked the engraver’s chalk drawing using pen and ink to reinforce passages of light and shadow and thereby emphasize the sense of drama. He corrected Judith’s right hand by changing the position of the index finger to leave clearly visible Holofernes’ mouth open in agony.
