DescriptionExhibition text: In 1618, Rubens hired the Dutchman Lucas Vorsterman to transpose the dynamic pictorial language of his paintings to the print medium. Vorsterman’s engravings were based on model drawings supplied by Rubens’ studio. This sheet after an altarpiece in Antwerp Cathedral has a richness of tonalities, relying on a variety of hatchings and stipples to render the plasticity of bodies and clothing fabrics, using the luminosity of the white paper in areas of light.
