DescriptionDescription: The Roman author Apuleius describes how Venus sent her son Cupid to punish her rival, Princess Psyche and how Cupid himself fell in love with her. Psyche was not, however, allowed to see his face. She wondered who he was. Her sisters persuaded her that he was a monster and carried a knife. In the light of an oil lamp she saw that he was Cupid but happened to splash oil on him. Sergel depicted the moment in which she revealed herself in different ways.
