Description: The Roman author Apuleius describes how Venus sent her son Cupid to punish her rival, Princess Psyche and how Cupid himself fell in love with her. Psyche was not, however, allowed to see his face. She wondered who he was. Her sisters persuaded her that he was a monster and carried a knife. In the light of an oil lamp she saw that he was Cupid but happened to splash oil on him. Sergel depicted the moment in which she revealed herself in different ways.

Beskrivning: Den romerske författaren Apulejus har berättat hur Venus skickade sonen Amor för att straffa rivalen, prinsessan Psyke, men Amor blev själv förälskad. Psyke fick dock inte se hans ansikte. Hon undrade vem han är. Systrarna intalade henne att han är ett monster och hon utrustade sig med en kniv. I oljelampans sken såg hon att det var Amor, men råkade stänka olja på honom. Ögonblicket när hon avslöjade sig har Sergel här skildrat på olika sätt.
