DescriptionDescription: Brown stains, horizontal fold in the centre Watermark: Unidentified circle Inscribed at lower right in pen and brown ink: Cabinet de Crozat, numbered: 910 (Sparre) and in more faded ink: 909 Around c. 1608 Ludovico Carracci painted an altarpiece representing St. Raymond of Peñafort for the Solomei Chapel in the Bolognese church of "S. Domenico". The painting shows the miraculous escape by sea of St. Raymond, a 12th-century Spanish Dominican, following his imprisonment in Majorca by King James I of Aragon. The saint uses his mantle as a sail, his staff as a mast Although the man depicted in the drawing is substantially younger than the elderly grey-haired man in Carracci's painting, we still recognize St. Raymond's characteristic attitude and clothing. On the verso is a detailed study of the saint's feet as they appear in the painting Catherine Loisel regards the drawing as a work by Marc Antonio Franceschini [Bjurström, It.
