BiographyBiography: After an initial apprenticeship in his native Bologna in the studio of Flemish painter Denys Calvaert (1540–1619), Guido Reni transferred to the Carracci academy. He produced easel paintings and fresco decorations on mythological and religious subjects for distinguished patrons in Rome, Naples and Bologna. Raphael and classical Roman art were the main inspirations for his graceful style with refined colours. After the death of Ludovico Carracci in 1619, Reni became the leading painter of the Bolognese school and his fame spread throughout Europe.
