DescriptionDescription: In 1794, Sergel was elected to the Danish Academy of Fine Arts as a foreign member. During a visit to Copenhagen that year, Juel painted this portrait and a replica, both which now belong to Nationalmuseum. Sergel was affected by deep depression during this period, but there are no traces of this in the portrait. Nor is there anything to indicate that the model was one of the leading artists of his time.
