DescriptionCatalogue raisonné: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 163: Technical notes: The support consists of a panel made up of four boards joined vertically. There is nonoriginal bevelling on the upper and lower edge of the work. Distinct traces of toolmarks made when the panel was roughly finished can be seen on its reverse as well as knotholes in the upper central area that are partly visible on the front of the painting as well. It was probably grounded with whiteish chalk. No imprimatura or underpainting is visible. The painting, which has been executed simply, consists of semi-transparent paint layers that hve been partially applied, including the collar. The red pigment in the background is entirely opaque. Extensive overpainting occurs all over the painting. Provenance: Gripsholm 1788. Bibliography: Cat. Gripsholm I, 1951, p. 116; Haitto 1987, pp. 75–81. Isabella Clara Eugenia, the daughter of Philip II of Spain married Archduke Albrekt VII of Austria in 1599. This knee-length portrait depicts her in a gown of white silk decorated with brocade flowers and with lace cuffs and a lace collar as well as a matching velvet cape lined in ermine. On her head she wears a small hat decorated with feathers and gemstones and in her right hand she holds a fan. The subject is seated in an armchair in a neutral background painted in a shade of red. The portrait in the Gripsholm collection is a copy of a portrait attributed to Rubens’ workshop in the collection of the National Gallery in London.1 The portrait in the National Gallery, which is a companion piece to a portrait of Archduke Albrekt of Austria (NG 3818), was painted before 1615 and was probably based on an original by Rubens that has now been lost.
