Exhibition text: In the Old Testament story, the widow Judith saves her people by cutting the throat of the Assyrian army commander Holofernes in his tent. This dramatic event is shown in the engraving after a painting executed by Rubens shortly after his return to Antwerp from Italy, inspired by Caravaggio’s famous painting seen in Rome. The print is the earliest dated reproductive print after a work by Rubens and bears a dedication to his friend Johannes Woverius.

Den dramatiska händelsen återges i kopparsticket efter en målning utförd av Rubens kort efter hemkomsten till Antwerpen från Italien, inspirerad av Caravaggios berömda målning som han sett i Rom. Bladet är den första reproduktionsgrafiken efter ett verk av Rubens och tillägnades vännen Johannes Woverius.
