DescriptionDescription: A teratogen is an agent or factor which causes damage and malformations of the foetus. This sculpture may be seen in the context of a growing fear of humans’ influence on themselves and their surroundings. The Thalidomide scandal of the early 1960s was an example of this: the medicine (called Neurosedyn in Sweden), given to pregnant women, was shown to cause physical malformations of the foetus.
