DescriptionDescription: Black chalk, pen and point of brush in brown ink, brown wash, 160 x 210 mm. Ruled framing lines in brown ink. Watermark: Indecipherable. Chain lines: 28 mm. Numbered in the lower right corner, in pen and brown ink, 1901 (Sparre) and 13 (struck out). Mark of the Royal Museum (Lugt 1638). Some faint chalk lines show that the composition was intended to include several more figures in the background. Attributed to Brouwer in the Crozat Collection. Recent suggestions are Pieter Quast and Andries Both. The manner suggests Both. If by him, the grotesque frame drawn around the scene is unique. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 87]
