DescriptionDescription: Black and red chalk, brown wash, 230 x 272 mm. Verso: Details of a ceiling with wooden beams, black chalk. Ruled framing lines in black chalk (missing along the top). Both upper corners are damaged. The red chalk has “bled” in the washed areas, giving the wash a reddish tone. Watermark: Coat of arms. Chain lines: 26 mm. Mark of the Royal Museum (Lugt 1638). Inscribed at the bottom right, in pen and brown ink, Bega. Inscribed on the verso, in red chalk, Bega, 3 (crossed out) and N:o 8 (crossed out). The primary sketch in black chalk is reworked in red chalk. The wash seems to have been applied in two stages; in the central part where the red chalk is concentrated, the wash has a warmer tone. There are also a few accents added with short strokes in black. While this scene is set in the open, the verso is obviously a study of an interior, also a frequent setting of peasant scenes – a tavern, kitchen or barn. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 20]
