DescriptionDescription: Pen and brown ink, blue and reddish wash, 154 x 262 mm. Framing lines in black ink. A hole repaired at the upper left. Watermark: Fleur-de-lis (close to Heawood 1768: c. 1616). Inscribed in the lower left corner, Peirelis, and numbered in the lower right corner, 1998 (Sparre), in pen and brown ink. Mark of the Royal Museum (Lugt 1638). As Keyes points out, this drawing is similar in style and composition to drawings in the Louvre and the Fondation Custodia. Boats sailing by a promontory with a church also occur among the etchings after Wieringen. The Louvre drawing is traced for transfer and was engraved by Jan van de Velde. Another comparable drawing is in the Albertina, Vienna, attributed in Benesch’s catalogue of 1928 to H. Vroom. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 481]
