DescriptionDescription: Pen and brown ink, brown and blue wash, 130 x 177 mm. Framing lines in brown ink. Small loss in the right margin. Watermark: The letters NGH / M and a cross (fragment). The early attribution to Jan Brueghel cannot be sustained. Rather, the style is clearly that of Van Wieringen. Cf. drawings in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The surface of the drawing is worn, and the background is very thinly drawn, with minute figures. It is clear that a village street or square opens onto a harbour, and there are boats in the distance. In the foreground a couple are dancing to bagpipes near a well. Two little children are watching. Beyond the couple, a funeral procession is making its way towards the church on the right. There might be a moral implication to the scene, and the drawing could perhaps be part of a series of village scenes with some such content. However, none of Van Wieringen’s other drawings or etchings by or after him have recognizable subject matter of this kind. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 482]
