DescriptionDescription: Red chalk, point of brush in grey, grey wash, 205 x 315 mm. Repair at the bottom, near the lower right corner. Watermark: Amsterdam coat of arms. Chain lines: 25 mm. Signed in the lower left corner, J. Glauber f, and numbered 8–, in pen and brown ink. Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). The composition is similar to the landscapes in a series of twelve etchings by Glauber. The prints measure 228 x 324 mm, while this drawing is slightly smaller. It is obviously a preliminary study for a painting or print, and the figure “8” inscribed at the bottom may refer to a series. The contours are loosely sketched in red chalk, and foliage and shades indicated with hatching, denser in the foreground. This is reinforced, and to the right partly changed, with brush lines and areas of wash, lighter in the background. This sheet is almost certainly identical with the drawing “F. Glauber No. 36” in Cat. 1730, p. 18, as part of the present album vol. 5 (cf. Introduction). Page 36 has been cut out, together with three others. This happened at an early date, before the drawings were given their THC numbers, since there is no gap in the numeration. However, the drawing remained in the collection and was given a THC number. Perhaps the following drawing (THC 3272) also belonged to the album. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 159]
