DescriptionDescription: Pen and brown ink, grey wash, point of brush and grey body colour, 208 x 284 mm. Ruled framing lines in brown ink (missing along the right side). No watermark. Chain lines: 23–25 mm. Inscribed on the verso, in pen and brown ink, J: Both. This drawing is identical in style to the previous one, but the ink is not reddish, but a darker brown. Here, too, the figures in the foreground have been added to the finished drawing. The observations made regarding the previous drawing also apply to this one. For reasons of style and size, Burke considered this, the previous drawing and two more in the British Museum to belong together, and related them to a group of late paintings by Both. They represent variations on a theme: a road winding along a hillside with a valley or stream to one side, and a group of trees in the foreground. The present composition was used for a painting now in the Minneapolis Museum of Art. The staffage and the foliage are more varied in the painting, and the tonal values richer.
