DescriptionExhibition text: In the 18th century, several new objects were launched to meet new needs that had arisen through trade with other countries. Through the tea trade alone, several objects made of porcelain or faience were created: tea jars, slop bowls (for used tea leaves), teapots and tea cups with saucers in various sizes and styles. A similar series of objects were made for tobacco products. A flower in low relief is the only decoration on the tobacco jar made of soft-paste porcelain. This type of porcelain has gained its name from being fired at just 1200 degrees Celsius, in contrast with hard-paste porcelain (also known as true porcelain), which is fired at 1450 degrees. The firing at lower heat gives the glazed surface a softer look with less sharp contours.
