DescriptionDescription: The artist’s own thoughts, for the exhibition Expressions in Glass 2019 Text by Maja Heuer on behalf of Monica Backström: “NOT EVEN IN NATURE ITSELF CAN YOU FIND AS PECULIAR EXAMPLES” In the mid-1970s a new phase of Monica’s creativity began. When the “green wave” swept over Sweden she had already been living in the countryside for many years, growing vegetables and picking mushrooms and berries as self-evident features of her everyday life. When Monica was given complete liberty to design objects for an exhibition in Australia it was therefore natural for her to start from the countryside and the forests of Småland. “I am constantly amazed that a tiny seed can survive, germinate, grow into a flower and ripen as a fruit, it is always the same miracle”, Monica says. This is how mushrooms and eggs were conceived as glass. They were to be enormously successful and occupied the glassworks for more or less a decade. The Zelda series of vases, bowls and candlesticks in the same style were also a major commercial success.
