IX, b; Frommel 1999, 29, fig. 14; Zampa 2013, 166, fig. 2 EXHIBITED: Langenskiöld, Moselius 1942, 70, Cat. no. 336 The drawing is a project plan for the opening of a street connecting Via Pia and Via Rasella on the eastern edge of the garden of Cardinal Alessandro d’Este on the Quirinal Hill. The construction of a row of new houses for renting (a canone) on the western side of the street (labelled ‘B’) is part of the investment project, though in fact it was never accomplished. The legend on the lower right of the drawing notifies that a portion of the Este Garden, east to the street, might be sold to Monsignor Grimani for 790 ducati and that the new houses might give a profit of 160 ducati per year. The plan also shows that to complete the new street, the cardinal should have purchased part of the Grimani’s vigna on the corner with Via Rasella. On the southern edge of the property, four rectangular structures face the strada Pia: from left to right, a garden, a casino, a courtyard and a jeu de paume. On the same side, the ‘upper garden’ is composed of one row of parterres and of a grove embellished by the Fontana del Bosco (built in 1560; Frommel 1999, 38–39 and figs. 30–32). On the northern side, the ‘lower garden’ is characterised by a formal design with straight paths. Along Via Rasella, two blocks of houses that had already been built (case già fatte), also belonging to Cardinal Alessandro, define the edge of the Este Garden. The Este Garden shown in the drawing is the former Vigna Boccaccio, donated by Pope Pius IV to Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este in 1560, which remained in the family’s hands until 13 May 1624, when Pope Urban VIII succeeded in purchasing it from Cesare d’Este, Duke of Modena (Archivio di Stato di Roma, Notai dell'RCA, Domenico Fonthia, 727, f. 356; quoted in Zampa 2013, 165, notes 11 and 12). The inscription on the right edge of the drawing, ‘Giardino di Montecavallo’, states that the area west of the Este Garden already belonged to the Papal Palace. This means that the project plan must be dated after 1587, when the Camera Apostolica purchased part of the Este estate, the former Vigna Carafa. The drawing is related to Cat. no. 154 LITERATURE: Frommel 1999; Colalucci 2002; Zampa 2013 [end]
