DescriptionDescription: Grand tourists in Italy needed to have personal chaperones, whose responsibilities included the safety of their charges. These chaperones came to be jokingly called “bear leaders”, as they were likened to Europe’s travelling bear trainers who made their bears dance to entertain city folk. Dr. James Hay was one such bear leader, and guided travellers around Italy in the years 1704-1729.
