DescriptionDescription: In the early 16th century, clock mechanisms were refined by the replacement of weights with steel springs. This also enabled smaller clocks to be made for domestic settings. Gilt-metal table clocks with engraved decoration became status symbols. The earliest examples had only an hour hand, but this one also features a compass and sundial on the underside to show the exact time. Steffen Brenner was a court clockmaker to Frederick II of Denmark, and also made clocks for the astronomer Tycho Brahe.
