DescriptionDescription: Watermark: Lamb (close to Briquet 56: Ferrara 1583). Inscribed at lower left in pen and brown ink: Chev. Pierre Libera. Numbered at lower right: 132. (Sparre) There used to be only one drawing that one could confidently ascribe to this artist: The holy family with St. Cecilia, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. There is also a drawing in Budapest, "Death of Adonis", that is directlyt related to a painting but opinions differ about its authenticity. Other drawings in the Uffizi, in the collection of Janos Scholz have been ascribed to Pietro Liberi on weaker grounds. Under these circumstances our drawing plays a vital part as it is quite clearly by this artist. It has been described as early as in Mariette's catalogue from 1741:"Un Crucifix au pied duquel est sainte Madeleine & saint Laurent Justinien; premier pensée du Chevalier Liberi, pour le tableau qu'il a peint à saint Pierre di Castello à Venise." The painting is extant, at present in SS Giovanni e Paolo (first chapel on the left; I am grateful to N. Ivanoff for drawing attention to its existence) and in it Liberi has further developed his conception and, by tilting the cross still more, he places even greater emphasis on its being held in the air by the three angels.
