DescriptionDescription: Butter dishes were made in huge quantities at the Älvdalen porphyry works. The most common variety, such as this one, has facets on the outside, a model that was easier to make out of the extremely hard porphyry. Butter dishes were often made of stone, since this material helped keep the butter cold; unlike wood and ceramics, it did not absorb grease. This dish has a knob made of gilt bronze in the form of a parrot; pine cone knobs were more common.
