DescriptionDescription: This desk belonged to Emanuel Swedenborg when he was an assessor for Sweden’s Board of Mines. Commissioned during his travels in Europe 1738–39 it was later donated to the Board’s Mineral Cabinet. The leaf in black Porto marble was probably made by an Italian craftsman in Holland. The resemblance of the variously coloured inlaid stones to real objects is intentional ”trompe l’oeil”. They depict a deck of cards, comb, notes, envelope and masks, etc.
