DescriptionExhibition text: The vase was long thought to be a separate object in the Nationalmuseum’s collections but can now be placed in the rich gift that the King of Poland and Elector of Saxony Augustus III arranged to be sent to Sweden in 1734. It was originally part of a garniture (set) of seven vases and urns, of which the central urn with Sweden’s national coat of arms against a pale-purple background and two vases with Chinoiserie against a dark-blue background have been preserved in the Royal Collections at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. The second vase that was one of a pair with the Nationalmuseum’s vase is listed as broken in an inventory at Drottningholm Palace as long ago as in the 1740s. Two lidded urns with a yellow base are still missing. There are examples of garnitures with parts in different colours, although they are unusual. Some of the scenes in the Chinoiserie on the objects can be found in the preserved templates that are now part of the collections in the GRASSI Museum in Leipzig, in what is known as the Schulz Codex. Description: This large, baluster-shaped Meissen vase has strong enamel colours and a cartouche-like chinoiserie decoration. It was originally part of a set of perhaps two vases and three urns with lids. These were placed on mantelpieces, in cabinets or on special wall brackets.
