DescriptionDescription: Pencil, point of brush in grey, grey wash, 148 x 190 mm. Ruled framing lines in brown ink. Watermark: Foolscap (fragment). Chain lines: 25 mm. Verso, mark of Christian Hammer, Stockholm (Lugt 1237). The same view is found in a drawing in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, attributed to Pieter Mulier by An Zwollo. It was previously attributed to Herman Saftleven. The artist uses shades of grey wash, leaving the paper bare for highlights. According to Zwollo this is a characteristic of Mulier, and an attribution of the present drawing to him has been suggested (note on the mount), but a comparison also reveals clear differences in style. In addition, there are significant differences regarding the motif, which would be difficult to explain if the artist were the same. In our drawing, the low shed in the foreground has a slate roof rather than being thatched. Another slate roof above it, leaning against the higher neighbouring structure, does not exist in the Utrecht drawing. There are other differences as well. In view of this, it seems preferable to maintain the traditional attribution to Molijn, even if it is not completely convincing. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 261]
