DescriptionDescription: This chest, or coffer, was made in India and was a very exclusive object when it arrived in Sweden in the 1570s. On the lid are the coats of arms of the Stenbock and Fleming families. The chest was probably a gift from the Dowager Queen Katarina Stenbock to her sister Ebba on her marriage to Baron Claes Fleming, Constable of the Realm, in 1573. When the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India in 1497–99, luxury objects began to be imported to Europe.
