DescriptionDescription: What seems to be two turtles is in fact the same animal from different angles. The painting aimed to be both a work of art and a nature study showing the animal in its habitat. Karl XI was interested in animals and received a turtle in November 1696 from a ship that came from Alicante. The following February the King ordered the painting to be sent to him; perhaps a beneficial distraction for the then dying monarch.
