DescriptionDescription: Black and red chalk, grey wash, 175 x 278 mm. Ruled framing lines in black ink. Laid down. The drawing was begun in black chalk and wash, and finished in red chalk. The red chalk strengthens and modifies the first sketch, and supplies further details, such as the relief on the large plinth to the right, or the buildings on the mountain in the left background. According to the 1865 inventory, the drawing was bought as a work of “Merings”, which was interpreted as Albert Meijeringh. The attribution is worth considering. The first sketch with summary hatching and broad strokes of wash resembles Glauber in this collection (entry no. 159). However, the red chalk displays a broken, somewhat nervous line and an interest in the details of the background, inserted with fine lines, that corresponds to Meijeringh’s landscape etchings.
