DescriptionDescription: This is a study for his monumental painting Midvinterblot [Midwinter Sacrifice] which hangs in Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum. The subject was inspired by Snorre Sturlasson’s narrative about King Domalde who was sacrificed for his people after several years of famine. The king can be seen, naked, in the middle of the painting which is a sort of historical fantasy. Carl Larsson never intended to portray the scene in a historically accurate manner. He himself termed it “a dreamlike vision”.
