DescriptionDescription: Inscribed in the lower right corner in pen and brown ink "T.V." Numbered on the mount "257" (Sparre) and "6" (struck out) A copy of this drarwing, or perhaps of a common source, is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The style warrants an attribution to the "Calligraphic forger", a 17th century copyist of drawings by Raphael whose work is represented in a number of collections, including the Nationalmuseum's handful of sheets. The style is very close to a drawing in Chatsworth (inv. no. 722) that Ferino Pagden considers to be by Viti (oral communication). They are identical in the manner of shading and the drawing of the Infant's features. This drawing is likewise based on Raphael, being a reversed variation of his "Madonna del Cardellino" from about 1507, without the Baptist. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 406]
