DescriptionDescription: Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 364. (Sparre) and 26 (cancelled) Barocci painted this composition twice, for the emperor Rudolf II in 1586-89 and for Monsignor Giuliano della Rovere in 1598. The first painting was looted from Prague by the Swedes, accompanied Queen Christina to Rome, passed there to the Odescalchi collection and was transferred to Galerie d'Orléans in Paris in 1721. It was auctioned in London for 14 guineas in 1800, since when it has desappeared. The other version is in Galleria Borghese, Rome. Our drawing is no doubt a copy after a compositional sketch. Today there are a cartoon (Louvre) and an autograph sketch (Cleveland Museum of Art, no. 60.26) of the composition, as well as a number of drawings of details [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 436]
