DescriptionDescription: Inscribed: francesquini quel apenu (?) dans l'Eglise de St. Etienne de Bologne. in pen and brown ink at bottom centre. Numbered: 4 in pen and brown ink in lower right corner. Numbered: 182 in pen and brown ink in lower right corner. (Sparre) This drawing is a preparatory study for a painting executed in 1697 for the church of S. Stefano at Bologna. Another preparatory drawing for the same painting showing some minor variations is in the Royal collection at Windsor Castle. S. Pietro di Murrone abdicated as Pope Celestine V in 1294. his successor Pope Bonivace VIII had him confined to a room in the castle of Fumone where Pietro di Murone died in 1296, attended by two Celestines.
