DescriptionDescription: Inscribed at lower centre in pen and black ink: le Dominiquain. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 931 (Sparre) Three female personifications are sitting on a podium before a temple front. The middle woman (Roma), holds a small statue representing Fame in her right hand and a shield with the coat of arms of Pope Paul V Borghese (1605-1621) in her left. At her side a wolf. She wears a wreath of leaves (laurel?) on her head. On her right is Ceres with ear in a vase at her side. She wears a wreath of flowers on her head. The third woman, sitting to the left of Roma, holds a cornucopia, symbol of Abundance, in her right hand and a flowing vessel in her left. On her head is a wreath of water-plants. At the base of the podium there is a second shield with an undecipherable motif. On the ground in front of the podium a group of elderly priests, led by the female representation of Religion are approaching from the left, some with wreaths of laurel and torches. On the right Prudence appears followed by Platon and other famous legislators of the antiquity. The composition was clearly meant to be engraved. Accordning to Mariette and Tessin an engraving was carried out by Francesco Villamena (1566-1624). There is an unfinished study for this composition, omitting the arms of Paul V, in the Louvre. Catherine Loisel thinks the Stockholm drawing may have been completed by Michel Corneille. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1488]
