DescriptionDescription: Numbered in pen and black ink at bottom right: 35 (struck out) and 667 (Sparre) The terrible Sack of Rome in 1527, when Imperial troupes invaded, plundered, and devastated Rome, humiliating the Papacy and the Medici Pope Clement VII, marked the culmination of the conflict between the supreme spritiual and secular leaders of the Catholic world. An armistice was, however, proclaimed on the occasion when the Pope crowned Emperor Charles V King of Italy at Bologna on October 24th 1529, ushering in a period of peace in northern Italy. Puppini depicted the Coronation of Emperor Charles V in a painting of 1536 for the "Cappella Farnese of the Bolognese Palazzo Communale", for which this drawing is a preparatory study. Another study is in the Louvre [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1279]
