DescriptionDescription: Numbered at lower right: 67 and B. Inscribed in pen and brown ink at lower left BECCAFUME. Tessin's own notes from the Crozat sale show that he acquired this drawing for 12 livres in connection with the sale, directly from Huquier who had bought lot 79 containing 23 drawings by Beccafumi for 20 livres. Mariette's states in the catalogue of the Crozat sale that this drawing originated from the Vasari collection. Poirier and Ragghianti Collobi, on the other hand, agree that the drawing once in the Vasari collection is another drawing to day in the Achenbach foundation, California Palace of the Legion of Honour, San Francisco. No surviving painting can, however, be connected with the San Francisco drawing. Its attribution to Beccafumi is not convincing, it might rather be connected with the master of the Egmont Album (Yale). The Stockholm drawing, dated c. 1540 by Samminiatelli, seems to be a preparatory study for a lost painting. Another drawing in pen and wash representing the same composition belongs to the Pinacoteca, Siena. It was published as an original by Brandi but rejected by Samminiatelli as a sixteenth century copy. The composition is related to a painting of the same subject by Sodoma, now in the Pinacoteca at Siena. The Stockholm drawing was attributed to Marco Pino in the catalogue of the Siena exhibition 1990 [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1075]
