The painting was commissioned by Matteo Palmieri sometime between 1466 och 1472 for the Palmieri Chapel in San Pier Maggiore, Florence. Ordered originally from Botticelli, it was finally executed mainly by Botticini. The representation of Christ blessing in the drawing corresponds roughly with the picture. The main part of the drawing is two angels, one of which corresponds pretty well with the one on the picture in the sixth row, on the right of the saint with a cross (S. Andrew). Another drawing for the same composition this catalogue no. 1054. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1025]
