DescriptionDescription: Carl Bergsten is perhaps best known today as the architect behind Liljevalchs Konsthall in Stockholm and the Swedish Pavilion at the World Fair in Paris in 1925. He also designed craft objects, especially furniture. At first glance, this piece of jewellery, a gift to his wife-to-be, seems to be a geometric composition. But the lower part of the pendant is a cabin with the betrothed couple’s initials and the date of their engagement, combined with hearts. The cabin is crowned by a star, which shines on the happy lovers. Carl Bergsten graduated as an architect in Stockholm in 1901, and immediately travelled to Germany and Austria on a scholarship. The impact of seeing Vienna and the geometric Art Nouveau style of the Wiener Werkstätte are obvious in this piece of jewellery stamped 1903, as well as in the furniture he designed for Restaurant Strömholmen in Norrköping, which opened in 1906.
