DescriptionDescription: Inscribed in pen and brown ink at lower left: Polajollo. Numbered in pen and brown ink at upper left 172, at lower right 45. (Sparre) and 5 (struck out) In his book on Antonio and Pietro Pollaiuolo, Leopold Ettlinger remarks that Antionio Pollaiuolo's drawings present a special problem: "His manner became quickly popular and found many followers, right up to the time of Dürer. There are workshop replicas, copies and many drawings in his manner." Ettlinger lists only thirteen drawings that he considers as autograph and refers to Berenson, whom he finds, however, too generous. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1004 (recto)]
