DescriptionDescription: Inscribed in pen and brown ink at lower right on the old mount: filippino. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 33. (Sparre) and 2. Inscribed verso in red chalk: filipino Raffaello Botticini has been investigated as a painter by Federico Zeri and Everett Fahy while only few drawings have been connected with his name. Besides our drawing, first attributed to Raffaello Botticini by Schönbrunner and Meder, an attribution accepted by Berenson, there are only three drawings in the British Museum. Popham and Pouncey base their attribution of the British Museum drawings on their closeness to a painting in the Uffizi, a Pietà traditionally and convincingly ascribed to the artist. Stylistically the Stockholm sheet differs substantially from the British Museum drawings. It demonstrates a smoother handling of the system of drapery and the face is quite differrent from those in the London drawings. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1035]
