DescriptionDescription: "In his youth he drew as much as any painter who has ever exercised himself in drawing in order to become perfect; wherefore there may still be seen throughout the world of art, a great number of his drawings, which have been dispersed by a son of his for ridiculous prices, partly drawn with the stylus, partly with the pen or in watercolours, but all on tinted paper, heightened with lead-white, and executed with marvellous boldness and mastery; and there are many of them in our book, drawn in a most beautiful manner" (Vasari 1912-14, vol. 4, p. 175) Inscribed in pen and brown ink along the lower edge: Filippino fils de Philippe Lippi. Numbered in pen and brown ink at upper left: 209 at lower right: 32. (Sparre) and 3. Inscribed verso in red chalk: fra filippo In Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, there is a study of the head of the Virgin which very closely resembles the heads in this drawing. The Berlin sheet is related to two pictures by Filippino Lippi, "The Virgin with four saints" in the Uffizi and "The Virgin with S Hieronymus and S. Dominicus" in the National Gallery, London, both from 1485. In her monograph on Raffaellino del Garbo, Hildegard Buschmann lists fifteen sheets, thereof none from Stockholm. [Bjurström, It.
