DescriptionDescription: Inscribed in pen and black ink at lower right: io fr. mola 488 and [cancelled] 48 Mola, along with Bernini, was the foremost caricaturist in mid 17th century Rome. But where Bernini surveyed society, elegantly ridiculing the powerful in particular, Mola tended to depict his immediate surroundings. The content of this sheet is close to a drawing in the British Museum that likewise shows four figures. The psychological drama is similar, with one person in the centre foreground and two behind his back in what seems to be covert communication. The figures are rendered individually but have not yet been identified. The attribution not accepted by Ann Sutherland Harris [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 771]
