DescriptionDescription: During a stay in Italy, Ingres drew a great many portraits, earning a major part of his income from them. His friend Jean-Louis Provost was an architect. Ingres has concentrated here on the character of his sitter, reflected in a cautious smile and gentle gaze. Draughtsmanship, or the use of line, was fundamental to Ingres’s images, colour of subordinate significance.
