DescriptionRes. Katalogtext: Bortolozzi, Italian Architectural Drawings from the Cronstedt Collection, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2020 (cat.no. 96) Anon. late 16th-century French draughtsman, Hand B of the Cronstedt Collection Pen and brown ink over grey chalk, light brown wash. Drawn with straightedge and freehand, 27.6/28 × 41.5/42.1 cm NM H CC 1380 PAPER: until some time after 2003, NM H CC 1380 (Cat. no. 96) and NM H CC 1380a (Cat. no. 97) were joined and glued on a thick sheet of paper. Arguably, they originally constituted one drawing WATERMARK: none visible INSCRIPTIONS: DOMINE QUIT VIS: M.V.LVII / D.O. PETRUS IN ROMA / DIVO IULIUS III / PONT. MAX. / D.O.M. SET. DIES / VIII (at the lower level, in the rectangular panel between the Ionic order); various measurements MEASUREMENTS: Roman palmi; no scale PROVENANCE: Carl Johan Cronstedt and descendants; Eric Langenskiöld; gift to the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm 1941 BIBLIOGRAPHY: Satkovsky 1993, 20 and fig. 35; Keller, Frommel, Schelbert 2002, 176, Cat. no. 59 EXHIBITED: Keller, Frommel, Schelbert 2002, 176, Cat. no. 59 The drawing depicts the wall of the garden towards the nymphaeum as built by Bartolomeo Ammannati, before the transformation undertaken in the 17th and 18th centuries. In particular, fluted Doric pilasters, later replaced by plain Tuscan ones, articulate the attic storey, and panels with reliefs representing classical motifs embellish the wall, an element no longer extant. On the lower storey, there is also the figure of Caritas in an oval panel, destroyed as a consequence of the enlargement of the entrance to the nymphaeum in 1775. The drawing has no counterparts in the sets of drawings of Villa Giulia in New York and London (see Cat. no. 85). LITERATURE: see Cat. no. 85 [end]
