DescriptionRes. Katalogtext: Bortolozzi, Italian Architectural Drawings from the Cronstedt Collection, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2020 (cat.no. 89) Anon. late 16th-century French draughtsman, Hand B of the Cronstedt Collection Pen and brown ink over grey chalk, grey chalk. Drawn with straightedge, compass and freehand, 38.4/39 × 57.4/57.2 cm NM H CC 1358v PAPER: heavy, folded in the middle WATERMARK: Tree 28 INSCRIPTIONS: various measurements MEASUREMENTS: Roman palmi; no scale PROVENANCE: Carl Johan Cronstedt and descendants; Eric Langenskiöld; gift to the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm 1941 BIBLIOGRAPHY: Satkovsky 1993, 23 and fig. 41; Keller, Frommel, Schelbert 2002, 172, Cat. no. 55b EXHIBITED: Keller, Frommel, Schelbert 2002, 172, Cat. no. 55b The drawing shows the elevation of the western (loggia) and of the north front (including the circular staircase and two-storey wall) of the nymphaeum with slightly altered proportions to fit the space of the sheet. Some architectural elements, like the obelisks on top of the loggia and the aedicules that frame the niches of the lateral wall on the second storey, were later removed. In his full section of the villa and its garden, the draughtsman of the Scholz Scrapbook at the Metropolitan represents the symmetric southern staircase and lateral wall of the nymphaeum. Only the draughtsman of the Burlington-Devonshire RIBA set of drawings of Villa Giulia (see Cat. no. 85) represents part of the western front of the nymphaeum loggia, albeit his sheet is a compilation of different architectural elements of the villa with no direct relationship with the Stockholm drawing.
