DescriptionDescription: There was a growing interest in children around 1900 among intellectuals – encouraged by books such as Ellen Key’s The Century of the Child. The architect Carl Westman’s nursery furniture was used in his own home in Saltsjöbaden. The design was adapted to children’s activities and body size, and great attention had been paid to the aesthetic qualities.

Additional texteExhibition text: Child play and scenes with children feature frequently in the watercolours from Sundborn that Carl Larsson exhibited at the Stockholm Exhibition in 1897. There was a growing interest in children around 1900 among intellectuals – encouraged by books such as Ellen Key’s The Century of the Child. The architect Carl Westman’s nursery furniture was used in his own home in Saltsjöbaden. The design was adapted to children’s activities and body size, and – like the interiors at Sundborn – great attention had been paid to the aesthetic qualities.
