DescriptionDescription: The portraitist Stirnbrand was active at several German princely courts. In the first half of the 1820s, when this portrait was painted, he spent an extended period at Karlsruhe in Baden. Prince Gustav, his sisters and his mother also lived in the grand duchy after they had been expelled from Sweden in 1809 and separated from their father and husband, Gustav IV Adolf. Prince Gustav later moved to Vienna, pursued a military career and was given the title Prince of Wasa by the emperor.
