DescriptionDescription: Georg Adlersparre’s good-natured expression concealed a fearless leader of the opposition against Gustav IV Adolf. In the face of complete military disaster at New Year 1809, he headed a military coup that ended Gustavian absolutism. Adlersparre’s own political projects quickly came to nothing, but Sweden did embark on a path towards the modern age. In artistic terms, too, this portrait marks a boundary between two epochs.
