DescriptionExhibition text: In the self-portrait, Michael Dahl wears a soft velvet cap, under which his own hair can be seen. Along with the loosely draped cloak, this was characteristic of portrayals of male intellectuals and artists. Dahl began his career in Sweden, where he was, among other things, a pupil of the court painter Ehrenstrahl. In 1682, he left the country for an extended stay abroad and eventually settled in London – a center for portraiture at the time. Description: Dahl was an early example of a Swedish artist who was active abroad. He trained on the continent before settling in London, where he achieved acclaim as a portraitist. Dahl was extremely market-focused and had his own showroom for clients. In this self-portrait he is wearing a hooded cloak and a red cap. The latter concealed his close-cropped hair when he was not wearing a wig, but was also the distinguishing mark of an intellectual.
